Plans

A yacht plan may come in one of two forms; as a lines plan or as a construction plan.

A lines plan is a two dimensional representation of the hull lines. The position and dimensions of the mast, fin, rudder and ballast are shown but no construction details are given. All SAILSetc lines plans since 1996 show the sections full size as well as reduced sections allowing for the plank thickness (usually 3.5 mm).

A construction plan gives more information concerning the component parts but the method of construction is not explained in detail. Chris Jackson’s book ‘Radio Controlled Racing Sailboats’ is the best current source of information regarding the planking process – go to the BOOK section of this site.

Purchase of a yacht plan entitles the buyer to construct ONE ONLY yacht to those lines. For additional yachts please refer to SAILSetc.

No rig details are shown on One Metre class plans. Other class plans show basic sail dimensions only unless otherwise indicated. Our One Metre Rigging Plan RP16d gives complete details and instructions for completing one of our Rig Packs.

VPP - indicates the design compares very well with others using our speed prediction program and we recommend that you choose from these if you want a modern and competitive design.

If you cannot source a good ballast locally, this may be the solution. The lines of patterns for ballasts suitable for an IOM, M, 6M and an A Class are shown. Carve a balsa pattern and let a foundry cast it. Instructions are given to allow scaling to provide any ballast from 1 to 22 kgs.

SAILSetc lines plans do not show the section shapes for the fin or rudder. We recommend using out moulded fins and rudders for best stiffness and lowest drag. Further refined version of SPARKLE. The hull form has slight Vee sections but is easy to plank. Build with balsa and skin with superlight glass/epoxy. Foils shown are SAILSetc 370 and 359c. Use a lightened IOM ballast.

Further refined version of SPARTAN. The similar hull form is easy to plank. Build with balsa and skin with superlight glass/epoxy. Foils shown are SAILSetc 370 and 359c. Use a lightened IOM ballast. The prototype used the standard three IOM rigs plus an extra large No 1+ conventional rig with shrouds and placed 2nd in the 2003 championship.

Refined version of SPAR. The similar hull form is easy to plank. Build with balsa and skin with superlight glass/epoxy. Foils shown are SAILSetc 338 and 359c. Use a lightened IOM ballast. The prototype used the standard three IOM rigs plus an extra large No 1+ conventional rig with shrouds and won the 2001 national championship with Vernon Appleton at the helm.

Close sister to PRIME NUMBER. Marine Modelling plan with a good deal of construction detail, an ideal project after NIMBUS. Details of carbon/balsa fin/rudder construction are given; or use SAILSetc moulded items 370a/358. Rig plan included. Winner of 2003 ITA national championship.
ASTRA	1999	Lines plan only 4.9 ± 0.2 kg	15.00 VPP
The plan shows two versions at 180 and 200 mm maximum beam of a hull form similar to STRAD and ROK. Needs to be built light for best performance. The carbon/epoxy fin and rudder 370a/358 are recommended. Mario Jorini’s timber ASTRA 200 placed 4th at the 2000 World Championship.
CUMULUS	1996	Lines plan only 5.0 ± 0.2 kg	5.00
A close sister to PARADOX. Plan includes a good deal of construction detail and the boat is an ideal project to follow on from NIMBUS/NIMBUS II. Details of balsa/carbon fin and rudder construction are given; or use items 370a/358a. Rig plan for economical swing and shroudless rigs included. Slightly higher displacement makes construction less critical.

In fact this is not a plan in the SAILSetc plans range but it is a new plan drawn especially for ‘Model Yachting’ the American Model Yachting Association. See the AMYA Quarterly Newsletter Issue 133 February/March 2004. You may get it full size in electronic format from the AMYA Ten Rater Class Secretary, Mark Gee. It’s free. Files formats are .PDF and .DXF. Contact Mark on 10r@amya.org or TenRaterSec@aol.com or see the AMYA website www.amya.org. You can also buy paper printed copies for around $10 post free within the USA. Building shadows are shown with a 3 mm reduction for 3.5 mm thick planks. Position of foils, rig and ballast are shown. Enough detail is given for the ballast for you to make a pattern for casting. The design is a development of IOTA and is optimised for light airs conditions and ability to outpace a Marblehead rigged as a Ten in all conditions. Free of royalty to individual builders, SAILSetc reserves the right to royalties from multiple builders. Thanks go to Mark Gee and the AMYA for the opportunity to test this method of distributing plans and to Phillip Playle for the AutoCAD work.
